As I was reading the Scriptures this morning I was reading from Matthew and while reading it this morning I came across a familiar portion of Scripture, I have read it many times but this time it stood out to me.
23Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.
24 The news about Him spread throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, paralytics; and He healed them.
You see when Jesus decided to start his ministry he didn’t need a website, a venue or a license. I am not negating any of those because I believe that these things can enhance a ministry but they are not necessary to start one. In this portion of scripture you also see Jesus’ model for ministry. He started three things at the beginning of his ministry that significantly mark the ministry of Jesus for the rest of his time on this earth.
I believe that this model is one that we need to follow today.
- Jesus taught: One of the first things you will notice about the ministry of Jesus is that he took the time to teach! Throughout scripture you see Jesus took time and taught the people around him. He did this mainly through parables (stories).
- Jesus proclaimed: Jesus proclaimed the kingdom wherever he went. He did not proclaim his agenda (because his agenda was the Father’s agenda, I’ll leave that alone for another time), his “products” or his “ideas”. Jesus’ mission was to proclaim the KINGDOM. Something I believe we should get back to
- Jesus healed: This is something I think is missing in most preaching. With saying that I also need to say that I do not believe all healing is physical. When Jesus taught people got healed emotionally (forgiveness), spiritually (the thief on the cross) as well as physically. When the word of God goes forth as we proclaim the KINGDOM things should start to happen.
