“Are you the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?” ~Luke 7:20
This is the question that John sent his disciples to ask Jesus right before he was beheaded. John was in prison and I’m not sure what was going through his mind at the time but we can get a glimpse of what he was thinking by looking at this question. Jesus are you the one I have been looking for, baptizing for, gave my life for, or should I look for someone else?
This is a hard question for me to fathom not because I don’t think I would of asked it but because it is John the Baptist that is asking the question. John the one that was the trailblazer for Jesus, the one that saw the dove descend on Jesus, the one he told his disciples to follow so why would John ask. This is an assumption but I think maybe John was discouraged. He has done all this work setting up the way for Jesus and now Jesus is here and he is sitting in prison.
John asked the question that everyone asks. Sunday is Easter and people will flood the church discouraged from life’s trials and tribulations and they will come with this one question. Jesus are you the one I have been looking for, are you the expected one? Are you the one that can save me or do I look for another, are you the one that can heal me or do I look for another, are you the one that can restore my marriage or do I look for another, are you the one? Jesus are you the one?
This is Jesus answer to Johns question
“And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the gospel preached to them.” ~ Luke 7:22 (NASB)
Basically Jesus said YES, I am the one. The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, dead are raised, the poor are hearing the gospel preached! Yes I am the one! Yes I am the one you have been expecting, the one you have been looking for.
I say the same thing to you today. Jesus is the one that you are looking for. YES he can save you, YES he can heal you, YES he can restore your marriage, YES he can deliver you from your addictions. Jesus can and Jesus will.
Jesus is THE ONE!!!!
